Born in Monterey, CA and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Hal has been involved in music from an early age. Many forms of music influenced Hal, but jazz trumped all others when he was exposed in his teens to fusion artists Return to Forever, Tony Williams Lifetime, Yellowjackets, and Weather Report among others.
Hal took up the electric bass in the 1980s to get more work and quickly fell in love with the instrument and the important roll it plays in ensemble music. He has performed in many situations and in many different genres playing bass, guitar, mandolin, saxophone, resonator guitar, percussion, and singing.
He is one of the founding members of Sabor along with Brian Vaughan and Bo Kimball, and teaches music privately in Weaverville, CA.
